Minolta MD to EOS Converter – Vintage Prime Lenses

img_8944

My first real camera was an old manual Pentax my parents had from when I was born. I puffy heart prime lenses with huge, wide open apertures. My grandfather gave me his Minolta SRT-202 about two years ago that came with a Rokkor 50mm f/1.4 and a a generic telephoto behemoth. I bought a Rokkor 28mm f/2.8 about six months ago to add to the Minolta collection…

So I have a 28mm s.8 & 50mm 1.4 that I love using on my metal bodied 35mm SLR. But what about my 40D? It’s getting a little lonely and feeling unloved. Thankfully I ordered a Minolta MD to EOS converter, allowing me to use my old prime lenses on my modern digital camera.

The converter uses a small lens to refocus the MD lens onto the digital sensor. It works beautifully with my 28mm f/2.8, while it goes a bit fuzzy with the MD 50mm 1.4 when the aperture is wide open. Since I already have a 50mm 1.8 AF for the 40D, the MD 50mm becomes a bit useless on the digital camera when I can’t use the f/1.4 aperture.

There are tons of converters allowing you take take advantage of glass you may have that isn’t used on a daily basis or hand me downs you may be able to get from family members. I ordered mine on eBay from a vendor in Hong Kong. It took about 3-4 weeks to make its way to Fort Lauderdale and was well worth its mere $35 w/ shipping.

Examples of some photos shot with the converter:

    Best camera-friendly purchase IMO :)

It seemed to work out well for your lens. Doesn’t hurt that you have a Rokkor lens either :)

I have some older lenses (Minolta Zoom Macro 80-200mm f4.5 & Sigma Macro 90mm f2.8) that I’d like to experiment with on my Canon XTi. Where did you purchase the converter? Any help would be appreciate!

@jsuar : i got the converter on ebay. Just google EOS to MD converter. Make sure to get one with the lens for refocusing. Mine sadly doens’t work well with my 50mm 1.4, the whole thing goes blurry, but works like a champ with my 28mm 2.8. I have a 40D which has a really similar sensor to your XTi, so the results should be about the same.

good luck, but nothing beats film. The convenience factor of digital is what always woos me.
