Groovin Mixtape

So enough of dickin’ around. We’re throwing down some jams, coated with a thick layer of bacon grease for you here at El Sanchez. I’m un-apologetically not stickin’ to one genre, style, sub-genre, philosophy, color group, movement or what-have-you. If I downloaded it in the past couple of weeks and I thought it was hot, it’s included in this mixtape.

I always end up pulling a ton of songs I like when making a mix, but two to three end up as stragglers getting cut out at the end of the process. Those stragglers then get dumped into a next mix playlist and I start from there next time. Sometimes those mixes don’t work the next time either. That leads to a bunch of strong songs that just are in limbo, not on a mix, not being listened to. This makes for an un-happy Agustin.

Half of the songs on this mix are remnants that didn’t fit into my last two mixes.
Another half ended up in a mix-bin for next week.

Hopefully you dig a few tracks. Happy Friday!

Ten Tips to Making a Kickass Mixtape…

Mixtapes conjure ideas of courting girlfriends, the 80’s, backpacker hip hop, plastic cassette tapes, hand scrawled notes, and white-hiss. I have many fond memories of sitting on a hardwood floor in my dad’s apartment, using a double cassette deck to record my favorite songs off LIVE 105, & patching all my favorite songs together into a mish-mosh of haphazard songs.

Today the internet has been a game-changer for how people consume, collect, digest and process music. No longer are music lovers going to the radio’s Top 40 as the end all be all for all of their music. High quality music is now accessible in any genre to just about anyone who looks hard enough.

Will You Be My Valentine?

February 15th, 2009

Friday evenings usually lead to meeting up with my wife after work for an intimate dinner, or drinks with friends. This last Friday however had this little designer scrambling to the grocery store, along other miscellaneous errands, to prepare for for some V-Day Festivities.

Valentine’s Day Mixtape + Wallpaper

My dirty little secret is I barely ever listen to words in songs. I’ve been a musician since I was 13, so I honestly first listen to melody, harmonic structure, production, etc etc etc. My wife actually makes fun of me because I sing “fake words” (aka weird sounds) along with the melody (in key mind you) but yeah, I suck at knowing words to songs.

So a few weeks ago when I sat down to do my February mix, I pre-emptively pulled a few songs for a Valentine’s day mix. Many of the songs I pulled didn’t make the final list but were a great start. Usually when I set out to make a playlist with a specific theme, it takes a little longer than other mixes. Your focus isn’t on what’s new, or a certain style, but evoking emotion, tone, and most of all making sure that lyrical content matches.

My worst nightmare, and it happens regularly, is finding a song that matches the tone and feeling I’m seeking and the words are a complete disconnect. Trying to find a Radiohead song, for example, to include on my wedding mix (they were our favors at the wedding because we’re fucking cool) proved impossible.

In the end, the constraints always yield good results.

I ordered this mix in an attempt to follow the curve of a heart shape; starting slowly, flaring sharply and then gradually decreasing into a lull. I didn’t stick to a particular genre or preiod, mixing Bob Dylan with Muse, Silverchair with Lily Allen, etc. Sometimes that works out, other times it sounds like eating chicken wings with mint chip ice cream.

Download the mix, burn a CD and give it to someone.
